Emergency Response

Response and emergency management deals with the factors that need to be considered and the actions which need to be taken during a suspected or confirmed outbreak of avian influenza or other infectious disease. It recognizes the need for planned, well-tested systems and arrangements as well the availability of sufficient and skilled human resources to ensure that the impact of an outbreak is limited.

Information resources available under this element include:

  • examples of various policies and procedures used by countries in the APEC region
  • examples of national contingency manuals
  • OIE guidelines on compartmentalization
  • strategies to limit the spread of HPAI at source in birds
  • guidelines on personal protection for animal workers
  • examples of depopulation techniques and guidance on disinfecting premises and equipment
  • rapid containment operations for pandemic influenza.
